An authentic piece of European sacred history. Sourced directly from France, this exquisite late 19th-century images pieuses (holy card) is a stunning example of classic French devotional art.

The card features a rich oval chromolithograph depicting the Child Jesus as Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World). He wears traditional red and blue liturgical garments, raising his right hand in a holy blessing while cradling the globus cruciger (the cross-topped orb) representing his sovereignty over the Earth.

A breathtakingly intricate paper lace border frames the central portrait. Known historically in France as a canivet, these cards were meticulously die-cut using fine stamps to mimic delicate lace textiles. Produced during the late Victorian/Napoleon III era, cards of this tier were often crafted by renowned Parisian publishers near the Church of St. Sulpice and gifted to commemorate first communions or confirmation milestones.
Capture a piece of historic devotion with this exquisite antique French holy card (canivet). This rare find features an oval chromolithograph illustration of the Child Jesus as Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World), beautifully detailed with rich red and blue garments, holding the globus cruciger (cross-bearing orb) and offering a sign of blessing.
The back of the card features a beautiful devotional prayer. Translated, it reads -
"In sickness, adversity, and sorrow, remember, Christian, that an hour of anguish will be rewarded by eternities of beatitude. Wait and hope against all hope: time will change, the storm will fade, and the angels sent by God will come to gently untie you from the cross."

This piece is in lovely antique condition with a beautiful natural patina and minor age-related toning that adds to its authentic charm. Perfect for framing, adding to a vintage ephemera collection, using in junk journals, or placing on a home altar. This paper lace holy card is perfect for collectors of sacred relics, Catholic history, or unique paper ephemera. It measures 3" x 4.25".
