Beautiful antique luxury French chocolate presentation casket produced for the high-end Parisian chocolatier Marquise de Sévigné. Founded in 1898 by Clémentine and Auguste Rouzaud, the brand specialized in ultra-premium chocolates. They built their immense reputation not just on sweets, but on selling them inside elaborate, museum-quality keepsake boxes (cartonnage de luxe) that customers kept forever. Judging by the silk-on-silk embroidery, twisted wire trim, and domed casket form, this specific box likely dates from the Belle Époque to the early Art Deco period (circa 1900–1920s).
The design is a calculated Belle Époque homage to 17th-century French courtly luxury. It was purposefully crafted to evoke the era of Madame de Sévigné herself—the famous French aristocrat known for praising the exotic luxury of chocolate to the court of Louis XIV. Embroidered caskets (often referred to as an embroidered box or jewelry casket) were designed with a classic domed lid (or "cambered" top) that mirrors traditional miniature trunks and traveling chests of the era. Covered in a luxurious silk fabric woven with subtle damask, brocade, or floral tapestry motifs. The lid features raised, sculptural cording arranged in dynamic winding patterns. This was achieved using heavily twisted metallic threads—a highly valued technique in historic needlework. Outfitted with an intricate gilt-brass openwork lock plate and a delicate functional keyhole. Young women from wealthy households created these elaborate boxes as a final showcase of their needlework, embroidery, and domestic craftsmanship skills. They were used to store precious personal items such as jewelry, cosmetics, private letters, and sewing tools. Parisian chocolatier Marquise de Sévigné created these types of boxes specifically for luxury clients, evoking an era of opulence long since gone. This particular box is 10.35" wide, 7" deep, and 7.5" tall.
