Beautiful piece of turn-of-the-century French religious folk art. This antique devotional textile panel features the artwork "Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament" by famed French academic painter Étienne Azambre (1859–1933).
Discovered in France, this piece is a classic example of a Souvenir de Première Communion (First Holy Communion Souvenir) dating from the late 1890s to the 1910s. The monochrome lithographic central pane beautifully depicts two winged angels raising a detailed monstrance above a group of children kneeling in prayer. The artist's signature, "E. AZAMBRE", is cleanly preserved in the bottom-left corner of the image.
The central fabric print is delicately appliquéd onto a thick cream canvas backing, flanked by hand-embroidered floral sprigs in traditional shades of rich red and olive green. The entire piece is finished with elegant, hand-stitched twisted cord trim that seamlessly transitions into a built-in braided hanging loop at the top and a tiny decorative tassel detail at the bottom corner.
A striking, deeply sentimental piece of European religious history perfect for collectors of Catholic art, sacred textiles, or French antiques. This beautiful antique 5.5" x 3.75" piece is in good condition, with charming, authentic age character. The fabric ground shows soft, even toning. The embroidery threads retain their rich coloration, and the central image remains crisp and highly detailed. The reverse side features an intact, original braided textile loop ready for hanging.
