Medieval metal detecting find. This is a rare lead token with a fleur-de-lis on it. The fleur-de-lis signifies French royalty and culture, purity, light, virtue, and sometimes chastity. The fleur-de-lis was also thought to be a stylized Madonna Lily. The Madonna Lily symbolizes purity for Roman Catholics and medieval depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary often show her holding these flowers. Another example would be Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc carried a white banner that showed God blessing the French royal emblem, the fleur-de-lis when she led French troops to victory over the English. The Catholic Church has used the Fleur-de-lis emblem for many years.
This is a single sided piece. If there was something on the back it has long since disappeared due to its age. This piece was found in England but I am not sure of it's origin. I would say it most likely originated in France. Tokens like this have been around for centuries but finding one with a recognizable fleur de lis without cracks and chips is rare. These pieces can be very small as this one is. Honestly, I am amazed it was even found. While it is perfect as is I also think it would be wonderful made into a piece of jewelry. If we only knew who made it. Who it was made for and who was the receiver. Circa 1600's - 1700's.
