This is an exceptional example of paperolle monastery work set in a recessed frame. These pieces were usually part of fine religious collections and this one dates around 1850.

This is a unique piece that holds one Agnes Dei Wax Medallion. (An Agnus Dei is a sacramental that consists of small medallions made with the wax of the paschal candles.) This measures 4.75" x 4.75" and .75" thick. The very intricate paperolle designs are amazing. Each small piece is the result of a single strand of paper which is twisted around a small tool to form a tight scrolling shape. This work was time-consuming and delicate. You can see small green pieces made with very tight rolls of paper, which give the appearance of green beads. Encircling the wax medallion on the frame edge is gold foil. The wax medallion portrays the Paschal Risen Lamb. The back is covered in brown marbled paper. There was a hook hanger at one time, but a make-do hook replaced it.

Monastery work paperolle relics and reliquaries are exceptionally individual. Each one is a precious labor of love by a person who has dedicated their life in service to Christ. These pieces emanate peace and love. This gorgeous relic is an exquisite example of nineteenth-century French monastery work.
