This is a rare baptismal cake topper we found in Provence, France. Antique French baptismal cake toppers—often associated with baptême (baptism) or première communion (first communion)—were typically crafted from delicate bisque porcelain or chalkware. This particular piece is the first one we have ever had. The baby sits in a cradle swathed in silk and resting on cotton. The baby is made of porcelain with a hand-painted face. The metal curl above the baby's head must have been a medal of some sort, but it is long gone. There is a metal spring between the baby and the base, which still rocks the baby when you move it. The entire piece is 5.5" tall, and the base is 1.8" in diameter. This is an extremely rare piece, at over 200 years old, and it is in wonderful condition for its age.
