This is a very rare and beautiful loose glass seal from the 18th century. The seal depicts the busts of two classical individuals—a male and a female. This intaglio is marked W.B., which could be the maker's mark for William Brown, but I am not sure.

William Brown (1748-1825) was a gem and seal engraver. He exhibited intaglios and cameos, first at the Society of Artists and later at the Royal Academy. His subjects were drawn mainly from classical history and contemporary portraiture. His brother Charles (1749-95, qv) shared his London workshop, and both brothers mostly signed their work. The brothers ceased exhibiting between 1786 and 1795, when most of their work was produced on commission for Catherine II of Russia. They also worked at the court of Louis XVI. After his brother died William continued supplying the Russian court intermittently and resumed exhibiting his work.

The intricate intaglio design makes it a unique and special piece.  This truly is a lovely seal. It would add a touch of sentimental charm to any letter.  This seal is a true gem for collectors. It measures .40" long  x ". It's perfect for those who appreciate the intricate style of these collectible seals. This would also be wonderful mounted and worn as a piece of jewelry. An excellent quality Georgian intaglio seal depicting a classical male and female bust.
