This precious crucifix was found in France but originated in Ireland. This is a souvenir of Mt. Melleray. The monastery was founded on 30 May 1832 at Scrahan, Cappoquin, by a colony of Irish and English monks , expelled from the abbey of Melleray after the French Revolution of 1830 , and who had come to Ireland under the leadership of Fr. Vincent de Paul Ryan. It was called Mount Melleray in memory of the motherhouse.  This piece has surely traveled. The iridescent mother of pearl makes a fitting backdrop for the exquisite figure of Christ. The figure is very detailed and finely worked.  There are two loops at the top for threading a chain or ribbon. The back of the crucifix is flat and inscribed "Souvenir of Mt. Melleray."

The measurements are approximately  5" tall (bottom to top) and 3" wide. Christ measures 2.25" tall. This crucifix is in very good antique condition. I have not polished it.

To find a crucifix with these beautiful accents is especially poignant. Please email me with questions.
