Antique S. Tomassi gilt-leather dome chest. Manufactured in Italy and stamped S. Tomassi, Gamberra 6, Roma, on the bottom. S. Tomassi was a historic artisan bookbinder and leather craftsman located at Via del Gambero 6 in Rome, Italy. Via del Gambero is a famous historic street tucked in the heart of Rome, running parallel between Via del Corso and Piazza San Silvestro. Between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century, this specific enclave was a premier luxury hub. It was highly celebrated for hosting fine art bookbinders, elite leather-smiths, and boutique stationery shops catering exclusively to the high bourgeoisie, foreign travelers, and Italian aristocracy.

Historically, master Italian bookbinders did not limit their skills to book covers alone; they frequently produced a wide range of luxury desktop accessories, decorative cases, and gold-tooled leather storage boxes. This domed chest is one such piece. This particular mark indicates that the leather box was custom-made or decorated by this specialist Roman workshop, likely between the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The deep brown exterior leather is carefully fitted over a hard wooden foundation, displaying a natural fine-grain patina. The ornate Neo-Renaissance borders, floral swags, and leaf festoons are executed using genuine gold leaf (doratura a mano). Craftsmen applied this by meticulously hand-pressing heated brass wheels, rollers, and decorative stamps directly into the leather surface.

The interior lining is frayed cream silk. It measures 5.25" x 3.75" x 3.50". The bottom is marked S. Tomassi, Gamberra 6, Roma. This is a lovely piece and would be perfect as a desk accessory or jewelry box.
