Rare antique French handmade devotional scapular patch, likely dating from the early 20th century. The centerpiece is a German Victorian-era embossed die-cut angel scrap. The paper scrap is mounted inside a protective, scalloped celluloid plastic pouch to shield it from sweat and friction when worn. The perimeter is meticulously hand-bound to the celluloid casing with a decorative blanket or whip stitch using a reddish-brown cord. The top of the pouch features a small loop stitched into the casing, which originally connected to a matching cord or ribbon.
While traditional Catholic scapulars are small rectangles made of woven wool, individuals frequently crafted personal Guardian Angel versions. These were intended to be worn under or over clothing as a daily token of prayer, faith, and spiritual protection.
