This is a Rare "Fil au Conscrit" haberdashery storage box. "Fil au Conscrit" (meaning "Thread to the Conscript") was an iconic and highly popular sewing thread brand produced in Northern France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lithograph illustration on the inner lid depicts a young French conscript walking to join national service. He is notably wearing a high military hat and carrying his belongings on a stick, while crying because he randomly drew the unlucky service number 13. These types of highly illustrative, character-driven labels were used during a time when much of the general populace could not read, allowing buyers to identify the brand strictly by its image.
This particular haberdashery storage box is cloth-covered. It measures 8.5" x 6.25" x 2.5". There is a gold clasp on the front, but sadly the top part is no longer present.
