Beautiful 1800s French religious icon of Our Lady Of The Seven Sorrows. The bottom of the card reads Notre Dame des Spt Douleurs. This is a darling embossed card in an iron frame that I have not cleaned as I love the patina. This piece measures 5.4" x 4" and is in FABULOUS condition. The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the sorrowful Mother and the sufferings she experienced in union with her Son and dates back to the 12th century. This feast reminds us of the spiritual martyrdom of Our Blessed Mother and her compassion for the sufferings of her Divine Son; however, the prayers honoring the seven sorrows of Our Lady can be said anytime throughout the year. Through her great sufferings as co-redeemer, she also helps to show us the true evil of sin and thereby leads us to repentance and salvation. The devotion is similar to the Rosary in that it consists of seven “mysteries” to be meditated on. These are Mary's seven sorrows, the great piercings that she received throughout her life with Jesus, her Son. The colors on the card are stunning and really vibrant, given its age. Another fabulous piece of history.
