We find many antique French religious items when we unpack our freight from France. Here is a beautiful Golgotha or Memento Mori crucifix. This is shown as is. I have not cleaned the piece at all, and it comes with original dust and wear commensurate with age, which I suspect is pretty old. The crucifix measures approximately 4" x 2" and is crafted from brass and dark ebony wood. There is a heavy metal loop at the top for hanging, and it is a very solid piece. Similar items are frequently described as French pectoral crucifixes, designed to be worn by clergy or displayed on a wall. The bottom front of the crucifix has a skull and crossbones. This is a traditional Memento Mori ("remember you must die") symbol. In Christian iconography, it represents Golgotha ("the place of the skull"), the hill where Jesus was crucified. Theological tradition holds that this was also the burial site of Adam, symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice cleansing original sin.
