We find many antique French religious items when we unpack our freight from France. Here, we have two beautiful Memento Mori crucifixes. These are shown to you as is. I have not cleaned them at all, and they come with original dust and wear commensurate with age, which I suspect is pretty old. The larger crucifix measures approximately 5" x 2.4". The smaller crucifix measures 3.75" x 2.9". Each one has a heavy metal loop at the top for hanging, and these are very solid pieces. The bottom of the front of each crucifix has a skull and crossbones. A skull at the bottom of a cross, often with crossbones, is a symbol deeply rooted in Christian tradition, particularly in depicting the crucifixion. It represents the burial place of Adam, the first man, where Jesus was crucified, thus symbolizing Christ's victory over death and the redemption of mankind.
