Lovely antique 1800s French bird. This hand-carved bird dates to a rich period of French regional craftsmanship, likely identifying it as a piece of French provincial folk art or a regional variation of the French "Black Forest" (Forêt-Noire) style of carving. Although I can't identify the tradition, decorative bird carvings of this scale in 19th-century France typically originated from one of three distinct traditions. The "Black Forest" Influence: While traditionally associated with Switzerland and Germany, French woodcarvers in the eastern regions (near the Vosges and Alps) produced matching deep-carved walnut and oak pieces. They favored dynamic, highly textured woodland animals and wild songbirds. Brocante & Farmhouse Vernacular: In rural French provinces, local artisans hand-carved everyday decorative items, using dense regional timbers such as European walnut, oak, or pearwood. Architectural Elements / Furniture Finials: Small bird figures with up-swept wings were frequently carved as removable decorative finials for large provincial hunting cabinets (buffets de chasse), mantle clocks, or wall plaques. Regardless of how this bird was used, it is a fragment of a long-ago time. It measured 4" x 3.25" x 2.5".
