Beautiful Victorian Faith, Hope and Charity fob/pendant, crafted in sterling silver and enamel. Faith, Hope and Charity was a popular motif in the Victorian and Edwardian period and is expressed through a cross (faith), an anchor (hope) and heart (charity). The way these three symbols have been incorporated with one another in this piece is beautifully playful. This piece dates from the mid to late 1800's. There is a small amount of enamel that has been chipped on one side of the anchor but given it's age I am not surprise. This is a just a gorgeous piece of history.
Faith
Representing the cross is faith, the belief in god, obedience and His revelation.
Hope
Hope, the anchor, can often be seen when combined with the cross to create the crux dissimulata (representing the church), but it lends itself to a more literal translation of the obvious anchor, meaning hope.
Charity
Charity is represented by the heart, which is often depicted as burning.
