Beautiful antique silvered reliquary from Spain by way of France. Found in Normandy, this lovely relic is actually from Spain. This is a baroque relic of the Virgin and child, dating to the early 1900s. It is an impressive reliquary crafted in silver-plated bas-relief metal. This piece reflects the enduring Sevillian baroque style, with its exuberant volutes, floral motifs, and symmetrical structure. The central relic is encased under glass and mounted on a deep red background of striped velvet. There are signs of age and oxidation consistent with use. The relic and glass are both intact. The rich natural patina enhances the relief detailing—the piece is 5" wide and 6" long with the original loop hanger on the back.
The backside is wood tucked inside a circular framework. These are often indicative of ceremonial display in religious festivals. This piece would have been used for private veneration or as part of a home altar in Spain.
