Beautiful antique scapular from France, Italy, or Spain. Unfortunately, I cannot tell which country this piece originated from, as we purchased over 250 pieces in a vast collection. This piece represents the Immaculate Virgin on a cloud, with angels, which are iconic in Catholic art, symbolizing the dogma of the Immaculate Conception—the belief that the Virgin Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception. The blue and white are traditional colors representing purity and heaven. The cherubs/angels symbolize her role as the queen of angels and her divine elevation.
This is a beautiful piece from the 1800s. It was made with a soft cloth and ribbons. This scapular is very large, measuring approximately 3.2" x 2", not including the lovely ribbon. This one would be fabulous framed.
Scapulars were usually made to order by nuns in convents. Devotional scapulars are objects of popular piety designed to show the wearer's pledge to a confraternity, a saint, or a way of life and remind the wearer of that promise.
Please note that this piece is not new. This is an antique, so wear is commensurate with age. There are a few small holes in the soft blue cloth.
