Antique papier-mâché container (boîte en papier mâché) from Lourdes. This French confection was manufactured during the late 19th century. It utilizes pressed cardboard or papier-mâché for specialty gift boxes. The gold embossed lettering and central design were achieved using a hot-stamping or lithographed paper overlay technique common on antique French containers. This box contained confections from Chocolat E. Mazuel, a historic chocolatier based at Place du Porche N° 4 in Lourdes, France. The central emblem showcases the company's hydraulic factory (usine hydraulique), built along the Gave de Pau river to power its chocolate production. The box is 3" in diameter and sits at 1".
