Antique French miniature souvenir hats from WWI. The hats were produced to include all countries involved in the war. These are miniature Italian Bersaglieri military hats (Cappello da Bersagliere), created as patriotic collectibles or souvenirs during World War I. Each miniature displays the distinctive, wide, rounded brim typical of classic Italian Bersaglieri headgear. The Capercaillie Plumage (Pennacchio): The large, dark cluster cascading over the top and side of the hats replicates the famous black capercaillie (gallo cedrone) feathers historically worn by this high-mobility light infantry unit. Visible on the side/front of the miniature crowns is the distinct circular Italian tricolor cockade emblem.
The Bersaglieri are a famous corps of the Italian Army, originally founded in 1836. Known for their fast, high-stepping march, marksmanship, and iconic feathered hats, they played a prominent role in both the unification of Italy and in World War I. Miniature lead or brass representations like these were commonly produced during the Great War era as patriotic pocket watch fobs, desk ornaments, or trench-art-style mementos for soldiers and families.
