This item is a vintage, hand-carved wooden nutcracker. It is a classic piece of French Art Populaire (Folk Art). In France, these handheld wooden tools are called a "casse-noix".  It was a staple item in rural French country kitchens throughout the mid-20th century. While many of these geometric, stylized bird designs were imported into France from Alpine regions and Eastern Europe during the mid-century, France has its own deep history of carving functional household treenware (small domestic wooden objects). French woodcarvers historically favored dense local woods like boxwood or walnut for making sturdy tools split into two interlocking lever arms.  The entire surface features intricate chip-carving with traditional geometric patterns, rosettes, x-hatching, and a stylized serrated crest along the head. Placed at the top is a dedicated crushing bowl that relies purely on hand-squeezed leverage to crack open small nuts like hazelnuts, walnuts, or almonds. This nutcracker measures 8" x 3" and is in wonderful condition.
