Beautifully formed French antique spelter bust of Jesus Christ with the crown of thorns. Dating to the late nineteenth century, this antique bust would originally have been painted in gold; you can still see where some of it remains. This sculpture of Jesus originates from the South of France and would make a beautiful decoration. This highly detailed design is attributed to, or inspired by, late 19th-century French sculptors, most notably Beroude (who actively sculpted popular devotional religious items during this era).
While it mimics a heavy bronze finish due to its dark, aged patina, these classical French devotional pieces were typically cast in spelter (a zinc-based alloy popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries) or pewter, then patinated or bronze-coated.
It is in antique condition. There is a mounting hole on the bottom to indicate where it was attached to a possible wooden base. The base has a crack, but the piece still stands and is a beautiful decorative antique bust of Jesus. It measures 4.5" tall, 3" wide, and 2" deep.
