A sweet antique silver chatelaine watch fob from 1902. Historically referred to as a Bierzipfel (beer tassel) or chatelaine fob. They typically consist of a woven silk or fabric ribbon displaying the specific colors (couleur), framed by ornate silver fittings (often 800 coin silver or gold-plated metal). The central metal shield or plate usually features hand-engraved initials. A spring swivel clip sits at the top to attach securely to clothing or a watch chain. It has been left as found, untouched and original. Such a beautiful confection. It measures 7.55" x .30". One cartouche, engraved on both sides.
In German student traditions (Studentenverbindung), a Bierzipfel was exchanged between fraternity brothers (Bundesbrüder) as a token of close personal friendship, mentorship, or appreciation. They were typically worn attached to pocket watch chains, chatelaines, or belts. This piece consists of a woven silk ribbon in the traditional German black-red-gold (Schwarz-Rot-Gold) color scheme, paired with engraved silver fitting hardware.
The central silver band is hand-engraved with German cursive script (Kurrent/Sütterlin), reading: W. Hafe dt. (Likely standing for "W. Hafe dedit", Latin for "given by W. Hafe"). s./l. G. F. A.
