Chasing or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, causing the metal to sink. The two methods are often used in conjunction. This piece is thin brass. It could be polished to bring out the brass, but I prefer the current patina. It would make an amazing cache-clous picture hanger or could be used in any decorative home project. You can still see the old paint touches.
