Antique late 1800s French repoussé gilded tole mount. Repoussé or repoussage is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Chasing or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, causing the metal to sink. The two methods are often used in conjunction. This piece is thin brass. It could be polished to bring out the brass, but I prefer the current patina. It would make an amazing cache-clous picture hanger or could be used in any decorative home project. You can still see the old paint touches. This piece measures 7" x 4".
