Antique late 1800s French angels. These repousse tole angels are from a church. We were lucky enough to purchase an extensive collection of original church pieces. This is panel one of four. Repoussé or repoussage is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Chasing or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, causing the metal to sink. The two methods are often used in conjunction with each other. This piece is thin brass. It could be polished to bring out the brass, but I prefer the current patina. This piece measures 7" x 6.5" and has wonderful verdigis on it. Verdigris occurs naturally, creating a patina on copper, bronze, and brass, and is the main component of a historic green pigment used for artistic purposes
