Antique late 1800s French lion mask mounts. These repousse lion mark mounts are from a larger collection. Repoussé or repoussage is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Chasing or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, causing the metal to sink. The two methods are often used together. These pieces could be polished to bring out the original metal color, but I prefer the current patina. Each piece measures 2" x 1.75".
