Stunning antique French porcelain pounce pot. This piece is from the mid to late 18000s. A pounce pot, also called a sander, is an antique desk accessory (like a small shaker) that held fine powder (pounce) to dry ink or smooth the surface of paper for writing. Common in the 18th & 19th centuries, made from materials like pewter, porcelain, or wood, often appearing like a salt shaker but used to sprinkle absorbent powder (pumice, sand, cuttlefish bone) over wet ink or rough paper to prevent smearing. Measuring approximately 2" in diameter and 2.25" tall, this is the only one we have ever had in our collection of unique French finds. This piece is beautifully decorated with florals and is in excellent condition, given its age of 150+ years. I have also seen these used for hat pins. We also sell the pounce you see in another listing.
