Lovely vintage Catholic pocket shrine (also known as a traveler's shrine, pocket oratory, or porta saint) containing a miniature statuette of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. These miniature devotional items were popular from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. Many variants were manufactured in Germany and France. : The removable or slide-in figurine is made of a silver-toned metal (often silver-plated brass, pewter, or aluminum) depicting a crowned Madonna and Child. These were designed for private worship on the go. They were widely carried by travelers and soldiers during World War I and World War II as protective amulets and sources of spiritual comfort. This single-pocket shrine measures 0.60" x 1". Please note that this item is not new. There is wear commensurate with age.
