This is an antique French "Papeterie" box, used for storing stationery or letters. It is constructed from red-papered cardboard and features a distinctive metal script plaque on the front with additional accents on the top corners and handle. The ornamental metal script on the front reads "Papeterie", which is the French word for stationery or writing supplies. The inside is pale pink, and the bottom is black. These specific boxes were highly popular in France and were often designed as elaborate writing kits for children, young adults, or dolls. Many well-known examples from this era were produced by Parisian toy and novelty publishers. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, specifically around (circa 1890-1930). The Papeterie measures 11.5" x 7.5" x 5". While this one does not include the normal items that would have come with a Papeterie, it is the perfect beginning to start one.
