Amazing mid-century French painter palette circa 1940's. This palette was acquired in Provence France. It measures 16.5" x 13". The earliest European artist's palettes remained relatively small in shape up to the early nineteenth century. Eventually, they grew in size and became rectangles in shape in order to gain extra space for mixing paints. Wood was the preferred material for artist's palettes because it was lightweight and rigid.
This vintage wooden artist's palette has remnants of very thick oil paint on it. It is a piece of art, to be displayed on a table easel or hanging on a wall and it is in wonderful condition.
