This is a lovely antique French olive wood wallet. It is likely from the late 1800s to early 1900s. One side features a hand-painted scene depicting flowers. The other side reads Marseille. These wallets were often produced as souvenirs from various regions in France. They were highly popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pocket-sized wallets feature a metal frame and a kiss-lock clasp at the top. The inside contains an expanding accordion-style fabric lining on each side for calling cards, coins, or folded bills. The lid is hand-painted with local flora—most notably yellow mimosas and purple violets, which are iconic flowers of the south of France. This wallet measures 4.5" x 3". The back side of the wallet has a repaired tear. The clasps are fully functional, and it is a lovely piece.
