Beautiful antique French monstrance. This lovely piece is from the late 1600s to early 1700s. We found this piece by chance in Provence, France. A monstrance (or ostensorium) is a sacred vessel used to display the consecrated Eucharistic host for adoration. It features a center compartment called a "luna" to hold the host. Developed in the 14th century as devotion to the Blessed Sacrament grew, they were originally modeled after reliquaries. This measures 19.5" tall, 6.5" at its widest point, and 3" deep. Truly a beautiful piece of history.
