This item is an early 20th-century French antique wooden grooming box, explicitly designated as a "Toilette de Pension." In French, "pension" refers to a boarding school or a traditional boarding house. "Toilette" captures the act of personal grooming and washing up (such as shaving, styling hair, or doing makeup).

These boxes were given to students at French boarding schools or residents of boarding houses to store their personal vanity and hygiene items. Inside, they typically held travel essentials like small mirrors, straight razors, shaving brushes, soap bars, hair combs, and personal care bottles.

The lid features a distinct, ornate typography set within a decorative geometric border, characteristic of late 19th-century and early 20th-century French graphic design. It retains its original metal front latch mechanism to secure personal contents from other residents.

Today, these authentic French boxes are highly sought-after collector's items in the vintage community and are commonly repurposed as rustic countertop storage boxes, decorative jewelry cases, or desktop organizers.

Made of satinwood, this box measures approximately 12" x 8" x 4". A lovely piece of history for sure.
