The distinct, geometric hexagonal or faceted bow shape at the top of these keys is highly characteristic of historical French lockmaking. Known locally as a clef ancienne, this style of warded key was frequently sourced from historical French chateaux, estates, and rural properties across regional France. Due to the vast number of doors within the properties, each key was numbered. Unlike the circular bows standard in English or American variants, French blacksmiths historically favored angular, multi-sided geometric profiles. The stepped, square teeth ("bits") at the end of the barrel are precision-cut to bypass the internal metal wards of traditional French door and gate locks. These variants are cast or forged from dense iron or heavy alloys, designed to withstand heavy, rustic mortise locks over decades of continuous use. These keys are each approximately 3.5" long, and each key is numbered.
