Bring a touch of historic French charm and spiritual protection into your nursery with this beautiful, authentic antique French Catholic cradle medal (médaille de berceau). Dating from the early to mid-20th century, these unique devotional pieces were traditionally bought at French regional flea markets or religious boutiques as gifts for births and baptisms. They were designed to hang directly over a baby’s crib, bassinet, or headboard to invoke blessing and protection.
Features a raised, detailed silver-toned relief medallion depicting the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the Infant Jesus. Embossed with the sacred text "MATER DEI ORA PRO NOBIS" (Mother of God, pray for us). The central medal is elegantly inlaid against a smooth, cream-colored vintage backing disc (likely early celluloid or Bakelite) characteristic of early 20th-century French craftsmanship. Comes complete with its original, delicate brass hanging chain and a secure top ring for effortless wall or crib display. Sourced directly from France. A wonderful heirloom keepsake, newborn gift, or addition to a vintage religious art collection.
This is a genuine antique item with light, elegant wear consistent with its age. The metalwork shows a beautiful natural patina that highlights the engraving's intricate details. The backing disc is intact with no cracks.
