This antique stone cameo is a mid-1800s brooch framed by faceted dark stones. This image shows a neoclassical cameo featuring a finely carved side profile of Jupiter (the Roman king of the gods), historically styled after Emperor Lucius Verus or a traditional Hellenistic philosopher. The figure displays classic divine and imperial attributes, including a strong, thick beard, tightly curled hair, and a simple headband or taenia. This specific design matches historic 18th and 19th-century Daktyliotek plaster casts and Grand Tour souvenirs. The piece is housed in a smooth, golden-toned inner bezel and bordered by a decorative outer ring of faceted, metallic stones that appear to be antique-cut pyrite or marcasite. I can't tell. It measures 2.25" x 2" and could use a good cleaning, but it is a beautiful piece of history for sure.
