Beautiful antique amethyst glass sash buckle dating to the late 19th century, commonly used during the Victorian or Edwardian eras to secure fabric sashes or belts at the waist. It features faceted, open-back purple paste or glass stones hand-set in a silver metal frame. The inner mechanism has a stationary crossbar and a swinging three-pronged chomp mechanism to grip ribbon, silk, or heavy fabric without requiring pre-punched buckle holes. These buckles were a staple accessory of the late 1800s. Collectors frequently adapted them for use as large decorative statement pins or cloak fasteners. This piece measures 2.25" x 1.75" and could use a good cleaning. It is a gorgeous piece.
