Beautiful, antique 19th-century French Aubusson tapestry fragment that was once a chair seat or back cover. The hand-woven textile features a central floral bouquet pattern, typically rendered in silk and wool. Such pieces were commonly used for upholstery on Louis XV- or Louis XVI-style furniture. The distinct flared top with a stepped bottom edge reflects the exact silhouette needed to pull tight over a wooden armchair frame before being tacked down with nails. Please note that most of the nails are still in this fragment.
Since it has been salvaged from its original frame, textile enthusiasts and antique dealers frequently reuse pieces like this for accent pillows backed with velvet or heavy linen to create high-end decorative throw cushions. Framed art mounted and framed behind glass to preserve the delicate, historic weave. Or possibly re-applied onto a new stool or small chair back. This is a well-used, careworn piece and would be fabulous if it could get a new life.
