This is a beautiful antique European or Spanish Colonial santo (devotional religious carving) depicting a female saint or the Virgin Mary. It features hand-carved details, heavily weathered remnants of gilding (gold leaf) and paint, and a traditional posture with a hand resting over the chest. The figure is mounted on a modern black block display base to preserve its stance.
The piece is carved from wood, showcasing classic Christian folk art styling found throughout the 17th to 19th centuries. It features prominent time-worn patina, loss of surface pigment, and typical splitting in the wood grain consistent with historical church or home altar figures. The long, flowing robes and contemplative, downcast face are characteristic of devotional santos figurines. The square base measures 3" x 2.25" x 2". The entire piece stands at 8.5" tall.
