I purchased this beautiful antique French relic in Provence in the early 1800s. It is a very old relic with a cut flower in the center and the actual relic on top of the flower. It is surrounded by small pearls framed in a gold metal cord. The background is blue with an inner frame of red and beige. The top of the relic has the inscription "EX PELLE," which translates as "from the skin," and the bottom inscription is S. ROSSOLINE AE V," which translates as "Saint Roseline. "
Roseline, Rossoline, or Rossolina de Villeneuve (1263 – January 17, 1329), was a French Carthusian nun. The Roman Catholic Church considers her a saint.
This particular piece is framed in a domed oval relic frame. The frame is black with an inner brass frame. This is the original domed glass, and I can see no cracks. The back is papered, and there is a small ring at the top for hanging the relic on the wall. It measures 2.75" x 3". Truly a work of art.
