Lovely antique, early-1800s French St. Vincent de Paul icon. This is a wall-hanging reliquary of St. Vincent de Paul. The central image is St. Vincent de Paul. He is on blue paper, framed in a brown oval mat. The central image is 3D and lifts off the page. Above St Vincent de Paul is a sunburst meant to shine the light of hope. The brown oval mat is partially surrounded by gilt embossed decorative work. The Mat also features four gilt-embossed emblems. One in each corner. The outer edge and sides of the piece are further gilded. The back of the piece is covered in blue marbled paper, and there is a hanger at the top. The piece measures 5" wide x 6.25" high. This is a very old decorative piece and a marvelous collectible.
St Vincent de Paul was a French Catholic priest known as the "Apostle of Charity" and "Father of the Poor" for dedicating his life to serving the marginalized and for founding the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) and the Daughters of Charity. He revolutionized charity work and priest training in the 17th century.
