Antique 1800s French Bible bookmarker. It consists of three ivory-colored pieces joined at the top by a small glass bead. These are silk and are all hand-painted. The central ribbon features hand-painted or embroidered ecclesiastical motifs, including a Catholic chalice and host topped with a cross. Each ribbon is weighted at the bottom with a tiny religious medal. These ribbons are often identified as keepsakes from religious milestones. These multi-strand bookmarks allowed a reader to mark multiple sections of a text, such as different readings or prayers during a religious service. The ribbons are approximately 6" long.
