This is a beautiful relic we purchased in Provence, France. A relic is an object, custom, or belief that has survived from an earlier time but is now outmoded or considered old-fashioned. Sometimes, relics are created by individuals for memories or sentimental interests. Identifying relics and their makers can be difficult, to say the least. A relic is also an artifact and a physical piece of human history. It does not necessarily need to be associated with a known historical figure. Relics have also been created over time to represent loved ones who have passed away.
This particular relic is in a metal case with a loop at the top. The backing is done in red with the words Cendres at the top, which translates to ashes. Underneath the center relic, it reads de la B? M.M. Alacoque. This could refer to the B for the body of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. Around the outer edge of the relic is a small band of twisted metallic accent. Margaret Mary Alocoque was a French Visitation nun and mystic who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in its modern form. Upon opening, a red wax seal is visible on the back of the relic. This piece is approximately .75" in diameter.
