These are beautiful mid-1800s French relics. One side has a chromo of Jesus and reads "Sauveur du monde," meaning Savior of the World. The other side appears to be a Sacred Heart with a crown of thorns. Both have the original glass covering the center relic, and both glass pieces are intact. There is a gold metal thread around the outer glass accenting the inner relic. Both are green silk with silver metallic twine wrapped carefully around the outer edge in a distinct pattern and a loop wire trim on the outer edge. Each has a single loop wire hanger for hanging. However, they can also be fitted together and held in place, although I am not sure they were meant to be put together. Each piece is approximately 2.5" wide and 4.25" long, and they are both in fantastic condition.
A relic is an object, custom, or belief that has survived from an earlier time but is now outmoded or considered old-fashioned. Sometimes, relics are created by individuals for memories or sentimental interests. Identifying relics and their makers can be difficult, to say the least. A relic is also an artifact and a physical piece of human history. It does not necessarily need to be associated with a known historical figure. Relics have also been created over time to represent loved ones lost.
