Beautiful 1800's paperolles relic from France. Discover a piece of history with this antique French religious relic featuring eight saints surrounding a center relic. This antique relic includes old Christian paperolles also known as quilling. Paperolles is the art using strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create intricate designs. The tiny strips of paper are wound around a quill to create coil shapes. Then the coil is glued at the tip and at the base of the coil inside of a locket or small frame. The intricate designs include flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.
This relic is lined with what looks like a gold metal cloth. Each individual Saint has their name on a beautiful raised piece of gilded paper with the actual relic beneath it. There are embossed gilded flowers between each saint. The eight saints Inside the relic are Saint Clemente, Saint Aurelie, Saint Placide, Saint Amerine, Saint Martin, Saint Irenette, Saint Enemie and Saint Janvier. The relics are behind an oval glass dome. Around the glass dome is a brass frame and around that is a wooden frame. The back has been covered with antique paper. Possibly a papier dominote piece. There is a loop on the top with blue ribbon for hanging. The relic measures 5.5" x 4.75" x 1".
