This is a beautiful Agnes Dei Paperolle relic we purchased in Marano di Napoli, Italy. A relic is an object, custom, or belief that has survived from an earlier time but is now outmoded or considered old-fashioned.  Sometimes, relics are created by individuals for memories or sentimental interests. Identifying relics and their makers can be difficult, to say the least. A relic is also an artifact and a physical piece of human history. It does not necessarily need to be associated with a known historical figure. Relics have also been created over time to represent loved ones who have been lost. This piece is approximately .50" wide and .75" long. It is a locket with a hinge and a small bracket for closing. The outer locket shell is brass with embossing. The inner shell is papered in red. One side remains blank and the other features paperrolles. In the center of the paperolle design is an artifact, and above it is scrolled paper that reads AGNES DEI.

FUN FACTS -

Agnus Dei relics are sacramental wax pieces blessed by the pope.  Made from wax, often mixed with chrism and balsam, they symbolize Christ's sacrifice and are worn for protection against evil, disease, and natural disasters.

Paperole - Paperoles can also refer to paper and relics woven together to create allegories of Paradise. These objects were often made in convents and are considered "small paradises." A paper craft dating back to the Renaissance, quilling is a technique where thin strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued.
