Antique 1800s French oval miniature. This is a hand-painted glass miniature. The religious icon is reverse-painted on the slightly convex glass. It is mounted in an oval brass frame with brass strapping tabs to hold it in place. At one time, the entire back was covered in paper, but given its age, some has been ripped away. The piece measures approximately 1.4" wide x 1.8" high. The inscription at the top reads N. D. DE ROC AMADOUR. N. D. de Rocamadour refers to Our Lady of Rocamadour, a venerated statue and sanctuary in the village of Rocamadour, France, which has been a significant pilgrimage site for over 1,000 years. The sanctuary is built into a cliffside and contains the tomb of Saint Amadour, the saint associated with the site.
