This is a beautiful relic we purchased in Provence, France. A relic is an object, custom, or belief that has survived from an earlier time but is now outmoded or considered old-fashioned. Sometimes, relics are created by individuals for the sake of memories or sentimental interests. Identifying relics and their makers can be difficult, to say the least. A relic is also an artifact and a physical piece of human history. It does not necessarily need to be associated with a known historical figure. Relics have also been created over time to represent loved ones who have passed away.
This particular relic is in a metal case with a loop at the top. The backing is done in blue with the words Ste Therese and Ste Germaine. There are two triangular relic fragments and gilt-embossed paper decorating the inside of this relic. Around the outer edge of the relic is a small band of twisted metallic accent. When opened, there is cotton padding in place, but we did not remove this. The back of the relic reads "SAINTE GERMAIN PRIEZ POUR NOUS" which translates to "Saint Germaine pray for us". This relic is approximately 1.15" long.
