Beautiful high-relief portrait of Christ, signed Mattei. Louis Octave Mattei was a French sculptor and medal engraver in the late 19th / early 20th century. This calcareous piece probably comes from the 'Fontaines pétrifiantes' in Saint Nectaire, France. It is a petrifying cave and the company 'Fontaines pétrifiantes' (or petrifying fountains) has used volcanic springs to make calcareous artworks for two centuries.
Still in its original frame with gilt metal tabs to frame and secure the piece. It measures 5" in diameter and is approximately 2.35" thick—truly a lovely antique French piece.
